The school was opened on 1st April 1940 and was built quickly to cater for evacuees from London who were billeted on the Sandhills estate. T he building was largely made of wood and, over the years, proved difficult and costly to maintain.

However, the school remained largely in its original state until December 2002 when a brand new building was completed. Sandhills school opened for the first time in the new building in January 2003.

The Main aims of the school are:

To provide an enriching school environment:

•  which is caring and tolerant
•  which involves partnerships between parents, teachers and children
•  which is safe and healthy
•  which promotes responsible attitudes within the community

To promote high standards for teaching and learning:

•  to gain skills and knowledge for life long learning
•  to focus on the development of literacy and numeracy
•  to provide a broad and balanced curriculum
•  to encourage everyone to be active, enthusiastic and confident

To value all people within the school community:

•  by providing opportunities for achievement
•  by encouraging positive social attitudes
•  by treating people with equality and respect
•  by encouraging initiative and a sense of responsibility
